Introducing Sister Bert Lieux

Gifts come in many different forms. Some are wrapped and decorated with a special surprise inside. Others are less conspicuous, such as a kind gesture from a friend or a special talent that one might possess. In any form, gifts are a way to show appreciation for another person. They have the potential to enhance the lives of others in a myriad of ways.

We all possess gifts of our own: characteristics and abilities that make us a unique person. Sharing these gifts with others can even be a gift in and of itself. Many of us may struggle with the idea of sharing our hidden talents with the world.

Someone with a natural ability for sharing her God-given gifts with others is Sister Bert Lieux. Never one to hesitate or stand in the shadows, Sister Bert has always been an outgoing presence in the congregation. Over the years she has proved her leadership abilities in her role as provincial in New Orleans, her management wisdom as the hospital administrator at Terrebonne General Hospital in Houma, and her innate knowledge of the human spirit as a development director for the congregation since 1992. She has shared her talents without abandon and gone in any direction where the congregation thought her gifts would be needed most.

In her many roles in the development office she has always held the responsibility of asking benefactors for financial gifts to the congregation and the added responsibility of thanking each individual appropriately for them. It is fitting that one of Sister Bert’s finest abilities is to graciously and genuinely thank others for the gifts they share with us.

She spends most of the hours in her work day writing personalized notes and placing phone calls to check up on our friends and donors across the country. She comes to the office too early and often stays too late. It seems that Sister Bert is never without her notorious positive energy (or her quick sense of humor!) for even a moment. She lends the gift of her listening ear, the gift of her encouraging words, and the gift of her unending prayers to all of our dear friends every day.

Sister Bert, like all Sisters of St. Joseph, knows what it truly means to give a gift: to bestow something voluntarily and without compensation. She spends all of her days doing just that.
