Four are golden jubilarians
Four Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille will celebrate the golden
jubilees of their religious profession Oct. 18 at a Mass at St. Frances Cabrini
Church, celebrated by Jesuit Father Gerald Fagin. The jubilarians
are Sister Beth Lieux, Sister William Matthews, Sister Lory Schaff and Sister
Mary Smith.
Sister Beth began her ministry as an elementary school teacher
at St. Ann School. She then did nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital School
of Nursing. She worked in hospitals in Pointe Coupee, Houma and Baton Rouge and
at the Fisher Clinic in New Orleans. For the past 16 years she has been working
at Loyola University’s Student Health Services Department.
Sister William taught in Grand Coteau and Baton Rouge, served
as teacher and assistant principal at St. Rita, Harahan, and as principal at St.
Frances Cabrini. She served as administrator of St. Joseph Convent for eight years
and also served as office manager of the Sisters of St. Joseph Medical Clinic
in Chauvin for a year. She served in the sisters Development Office until she
semi-retired in 1996 to St. Joseph Convent.
Sister Mary holds a degree from Loyola. She taught in Baton
Rouge and at St. Pius X and St. Ann in New Orleans. She took training in the Montessori
method of education, and taught at the Sisters of St. Joseph Montessori School
for 10 years. She continues to give community service at St. Joseph Convent.
Sister Lory holds a bachelor’s degree from Webster College,
St. Louis and master’s degrees in biology and religious education from the
University of Notre Dame. She taught at Mercy Academy, and also in Kansas and
St. Louis. She began working at St. Alphonsus, and by 1971 became director of
the newly established Hope House, an adult learning center in the St. Thomas Housing
development. She is currently doing adult education in an inner-city setting
in Baton Rouge.
